Primary text

This edition adapts Introduction to Chemistry: General, Organic, and Biological, version 1.0, preserved by Andy Schmitz on December 29, 2012. The offline archive was retrieved November 2, 2026; SHA-256: 47dd229428df6206601a9ebd8fdf0cce789a9d60da0951ad99b94cb3da46c329.

Content is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 3.0 Unported. Open licensing permits reuse under its terms; it does not mean the work has no copyright. The source requests removal of customary author and publisher attribution. That notice is preserved in the license page. Source biographical material remains part of the text.

The import preserves all 20 chapters, About the Authors, Acknowledgements, Preface, and the periodic-table appendix. source/manifest.json identifies every imported page, source checksum, image, equation, table, question, and answer count. Original combined HTML and the table of contents are archived in source/. Source links are rewritten to local chapter targets where the original target exists; pre-existing upstream link defects are recorded in the manifest.

Illustrations

The source’s instructional diagrams and chemical structures without a separate rights notice remain under the textbook’s CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license. The source’s separately credited images are classified individually. Stock photographs, permission-only material, undocumented portraits, and photographic material without separately documented rights are replaced before image copying. A visual contact-sheet inventory of every retained source image supplemented the credit-line audit; it identified additional photographs and a micrograph for conservative replacement. Restricted original image bytes are excluded from this edition, including the source archive folder.

Every replacement’s creator, source, license, alternative text, caption, and SHA-256 are recorded in figure-replacements.json. Replacement photos are reused from the individually documented open assets of QuadriviumPress’s Introductory Chemistry edition, with their original sources and licenses retained. The current periodic table is an independently generated diagram from General Chemistry; its atomic weights are CIAAW abridged 2024 values. Other new SVG diagrams are original QuadriviumPress schematics generated by scripts/render_figures.py, released under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. They depict scientific concepts rather than reproducing the replaced photographs.

See Image credits for credits by chapter and Figure audit for a slot-by-slot replacement inventory. Captions display individual credits and component license links. No embedded simulations or other third-party interactive activities are included.

Conversion and editorial changes

The project was seeded from opiniatedMystmdBookTemplate. The HTML-to-MyST importer and rendered-content audit are adapted from QuadriviumPress’s General Chemistry edition. MyST headings, callouts, list tables, figures, footnotes, and local references replace publisher layout markup; chemical formulas and mathematical notation are retained. CMYK JPEGs are converted to RGB and source images over 1 MB are reduced for web delivery, with both source and output hashes recorded.

Captions and alternative text change with replacement illustrations. Figure 2.7 and the appendix use all 118 official element symbols. The appendix’s original atomic-weight table remains a historical source table, explicitly identified as such. The BIPM kilogram definition supports the caption update; the CIAAW abridged atomic-weight table supplies the periodic-table data. The kilogram caption identifies the international prototype as historical and mentions the SI definition since 2019. The dialysis caption distinguishes diffusion of waste solutes from pressure-driven water removal. The household-acids caption distinguishes ascorbic acid, an acidic lactone, from carboxylic acids. Author portraits become named typographic cards.

The edition preserves the source’s problem and answer numbering. It has not undergone a full scientific or medical content revision; dated source prose and examples are retained unless a change is listed here. A 2026-11-02 proofreading pass with bindery’s Codex proofreader and hunspell corrected high-confidence spelling and grammar defects in the converted Markdown (for example, charactristic, compond, carbonatom, subject–verb agreement, and truncated figure alternative text). Those mechanical edits are not preserved by a raw reimport unless the importer is updated to reapply them.

Template code

The web shell, shared build configuration, PWA files, and template branding derive from the QuadriviumPress MyST template. Its MIT notice is retained in LICENSE-CODE. The textbook and original teaching diagrams retain the content license; externally sourced images retain their individual licenses.
